To Mother...

I was crying,  when you first laid eyes on me
Cold and hungry, I was helpless as could be
But you warmed me, held me close upon your breast
Then you fed me, and you let me take my rest

You were all the world to me
In those days of long ago
And you gave me everything
That I’d need to learn and grow

School was over,  so I struck out on my own
There behind me, I had left you all alone
I was busy, found a mate and moved away
Hardly saw you, 'til I got the call that day

They had taken you away
Where you laid upon a bed
But you could not speak my name
And just squeezed my hand instead

I was crying, when you last laid eyes on me
And I knew that,  we were helpless as could be
You were leaving,  couldn't  bear to see you go
Said goodbye then,  and the tears began to flow

God has taken you away,  and has built a home for you
May you find the blessings there, that down here you never knew.
